Design Discovery for a Watch App

Product designer | 2025 | Watch app | Discovery concept design | Research & product strategy

This project focused on the discovery and concept design of a watch app aimed at supporting users’ daily lives.

I focused on research and benchmarking, synthesising insights to support product positioning, and translating those insights into UX concepts tailored for a small screen.

The outcome included validated concept designs and research artefacts that guided stakeholder alignment, confirmed feasibility, and clarified the project scope ahead of development.

Some details, visuals, and branding elements have been intentionally abstracted or modified to respect client confidentiality and NDA.

The challenge

I worked on an early-stage discovery project exploring how a small, screen-constrained device could support users in everyday contexts.

Our client is a professional in this space. Through observation and experience, they saw that many daily tasks still rely heavily on people reminding, guiding, or stepping in for others. Existing solutions often depend on constant verbal prompts or manual support, which can be inconsistent, tiring, and difficult to sustain over time. This creates pressure not only for those providing support but also limits the independence of those receiving it.

Our task was to explore how a small, wearable device could provide more consistent, self-guided support. The device needed to communicate clearly on a very limited screen. The goal wasn’t to replace human support, but to see how design could reduce the burden on caregivers while encouraging greater independence in real-world contexts.

What I focused on

  • Took primary responsibility for competitive research and benchmarking across wearables and related products

  • Created user journey mapping and interview notes based on post-interview insights

  • Synthesised findings into clear criteria to support product positioning discussions

  • Rapidly generated concept designs to make abstract ideas tangible

  • Used light motion and visual feedback to explore engagement and clarity

*Competitive benchmarking matrix (modified)

*User journey map/Interview insights (modified)

Outcome

  • The discovery process validated the product idea and clarified its positioning and scope.

  • Concept designs made the product vision tangible.

  • The client received a complete discovery package (including research artefacts, interview insights, and concept designs) that supports the future exploration and fundraising.

*Complete a task user flow UI design (modified)
